Introducing Scout: Our 19-foot Airstream (And The Closest Thing We Have To A House)

Scout, our 19-foot Airstream Bambi

On a rainy afternoon in London in the early spring of 2019, Adam and I decided to sell our things and become full time travelers.

By the end of 2019 we were officially nomads, traveling with no real home and living out of our suitcases. A lot of our post-London life has been marked by house sitting, an arrangement that has been incredibly rewarding and that you’ll hear us talk a lot more about in the future.

We have no plans to stop or even slow our house sitting adventures, but we recently found ourselves navigating a new kind of travel arrangement.

With no grand plan in mind, we purchased my parent's old Airstream – an early 2000s 19-foot “Bambi”. They upgraded to a 27-foot "Globetrotter" to celebrate my mom's retirement and their newly-acquired freedom to roam the open roads. We named our new acquisition "Scout", an homage to our late beloved mini schnauzer, Scout Finch.

Scout Finch. Northern Michigan, Summer 2019

Our purchase was unplanned, but as opportunities sometimes do, this one unfolded at an opportune time. Almost exactly one years ago we bought a beautiful slice of land in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, on the shores of Lake Superior.

All of the sudden we find ourselves with an exciting project on our hands: A charming Airstream and an empty piece of lakefront land.

Admittedly, we have no immediate plans for Scout, and to add to the unpreparedness, we don't even own a vehicle that can pull her. But the thought of her parked amidst the beauty of the Northern Michigan, offering us a place to call our own… we have to say, it’s pretty neat.

In addition to a potential renovation (I say potential because haven’t actually talked to Adam about this part yet), we have another vision: a winter shelter that can double up as a summer extension. We’re thinking of some kind of versatile structure that can protect the trailer from the harsh winters and also provide additional functionality during the summer months. I have no idea where to start so I’ve been looking at a bunch of Instagram videos.

We’re stoked to own Scout and a we’re thrilled at the uncertainty, opportunity, and adventure that she represents.

Also, we welcome your thoughts, ideas, and inputs on this project and we look forward to bringing you along as we figure out what to do and how to do it. If you have any ideas to share, reach out to us at hello@theglobalhousesitters.com.

Onward,

Veronica and Adam
